The Online 404 smartphone is the core survival tool. There is no recipe book: you search an in-game web for answers while ads and CAPTCHAs get in the way.
Online 404 Smartphone: How the In-Game Internet Works
The smartphone is the defining system in Online 404, and the store page describes it bluntly: your smartphone is your best friend and your worst enemy. There is no magic recipe book to unlock. To learn how to build, repair or process something you search the in-game internet from the phone, and that search throws advertisements, CAPTCHAs and attention hijacking at you while it does it.
- Core tool: the phone is the primary survival instrument, not a convenience item
- Built in: map, flashlight and weather forecast, alongside ads and unreliable information
- Search friction: advertisements, CAPTCHAs and attention hijacking stand between you and an answer
- Keyword sensitive: how you word a search decides whether it unlocks the blueprint you wanted
- Also reported: the battery drains, and charging it means finding scarce power
The battery drain, and the phone doubling as a status tracker and quest giver, come from press coverage rather than an official feature list. The Steam friends feature is the one the coverage explicitly attributes to the trailers. Everything else here is stated on the store page or in the developer's own announcements.

What does the smartphone actually do?
Four things are confirmed on the store page: a map, a flashlight, a weather forecast, and a search function that pulls results from an in-game internet that also serves up annoying advertisements and a lot of unreliable information. The developer's first public announcement spells out what the search is for, and the list is deliberately unglamorous. You look up how to make something, how to fix a car, which mushrooms are safe to eat, how to butcher an animal.
The search process is not a clean lookup. The developer describes having to deal with ads, CAPTCHAs and attempts to hijack your attention while you try to get through it, and warns that you should not assume the advice you land on is trustworthy. Official artwork from the store page shows a Google-style search box at a searchweb.click address, with a CAPTCHA challenge asking you to prove you are not a robot, not an AI, and not a cat that walks on the keyboard, then offering a choice between four cat photos or four rocks. The joke lands because the phone is your most valuable tool and the internet is actively trying to waste your time.

Why does the wording of a search matter?
Because the search is the crafting system. There is no skill tree and no recipe list handed to the player; the store page's position is that if you want to know how to make something, you go online and look it up. Analysis of the game has picked up on the consequence, noting that unlocking the best blueprints depends on knowing the right keywords rather than on grinding a material.
That is a real design choice with a real learning curve, and demo players pushed back on it, with forum threads arguing that having to look everything up is more annoying than it is clever. The developer has also conceded one point of friction directly. Asked in the Steam forums whether a workbench could be used at all, a developer replied that crafting happens in the crafting menu inside the phone's Notes app, and that Notes includes an indicator for whether you are currently near a workbench. The developer admitted the hint was probably not obvious enough and said a short tutorial was being made. More detail is in our Online 404 crafting page.

Does the phone run out of battery?
Press coverage reports that the phone's battery drains and that you need to keep hunting for scarce sources of power to charge it. That is not confirmed in the store page or in any developer post, so treat it as preview reporting rather than a documented mechanic. It fits the rest of the design, in that a phone you cannot charge is a research tool you cannot use.

The same coverage describes the phone as a minimap, a flashlight, a status tracker and a quest giver in one. It also says the phone can show your Steam friends so you can invite them straight into a session, and that last detail is the one the outlet marks as coming from the trailers. None of that is in the official feature list, but the map and flashlight parts are consistent with what the store page does confirm about the phone's roles.
Why is there a working internet inside a quarantine zone?
Because the setting is not a dead world. The district was sealed off years ago and never fully evacuated, and the people left behind lost their minds and now wander the area, but the rest of the world carries on as normal outside the cordon. That is the in-fiction answer to the obvious question: if everything beyond the district still functions, then a search engine still works, and so does the advertising that comes with it.
It is also why the game's answer to every survival problem is a web search rather than a skill point. The scarcity is local, the knowledge is not, and the phone is the bridge between the two. Our Online 404 FAQ covers the other pre-launch questions, including platforms and whether the game uses AI.
